In a world where every day life seems to go horribly wrong, Viagra is at least as old as the earth and is the subject of a major new study by researchers at Columbia University.
This new study, led by researchers from the University of Toronto and from the University of Alberta, found that the erectile dysfunction drug sildenafil, which is often marketed for treatment of erectile dysfunction, is not as effective as a placebo in treating erectile dysfunction.
Researchers from the University of Toronto found that sildenafil did not significantly differ from placebo in the number of users who had trouble getting and maintaining an erection during sexual intercourse, and it did not significantly differ from a placebo in the number of users who needed an erection during intercourse.
Researchers say that the problem is likely due to the drug sildenafil, which is marketed for erectile dysfunction treatment in Canada, while the Food and Drug Administration has not approved the drug.
“Our study suggests that the drug does not work as well as it should in men with erectile dysfunction,” said lead investigator, Dr. Andrew L. McVary.
“The results of the study do not support the belief that the drug can be used to treat ED and treat it differently from a placebo.”
Sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, was first approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1998. Its effects on erections are thought to last about four to six hours.
This study was published in theJournal of Sexual Medicine.
“We found that the effects of sildenafil did not significantly differ from placebo in erectile function parameters in men with ED who had been taking the drug for more than two months,” McVary said.
“The results of the study also suggest that the drug is unlikely to be a useful treatment for ED, as it is believed to have little or no effect on sexual function in men, or on erectile function in women,” he added.
Although the study does not completely address ED, the study also found that men who took sildenafil had fewer ED symptoms than those who did not.
“This is not the first time that the drug has been associated with ED,” McVary said. “We also found that men with ED who took the drug had a small increased risk of having a serious heart condition or stroke.
“While these results suggest that the drug is unlikely to be useful in treating ED, the results do not suggest that it is superior to the placebo.”
The results were presented at the 20th Annual Meeting of the Society of Biological Psychiatry, held in Toronto in September of 2010.
